Rosemary Oil vs. Minoxidil: What the 2015 Study Really Found
You have probably seen the headline. Here is what the study actually tested, what it found, and what it does not tell us, explained without the hype.

If you've looked into rosemary for hair, you've almost certainly seen some version of the headline "rosemary oil works as well as minoxidil." It comes from a real study. But headlines tend to leave out the details, and the details matter. Here's an honest walk-through.
The study
The paper is Panahi et al., "Rosemary oil vs minoxidil 2% for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia: a randomized comparative trial," published in SKINmed in 2015 (13(1):15–21).
- Who: 100 adults with androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss).
- What: half applied rosemary oil to the scalp, half applied a 2% minoxidil solution.
- How long: six months, with hair counts measured at three and six months.
What it found
At three months, neither group showed a meaningful change. At six months, both groups showed a significant increase in hair count, and the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant. The rosemary group also reported less scalp itching than the minoxidil group.
The takeaway isn't "rosemary is a miracle." It's "rosemary is worth taking seriously, and patience is part of the deal."
What it does not tell us
Good science deserves honest limits, so here they are:
- It was one study, with a relatively small group of people.
- It tested rosemary oil applied to the scalp, not a shampoo. It didn't test RevitaRoot or any other product.
- It studied pattern hair loss specifically. Other kinds of hair loss have different causes.
- Nothing changed at the three-month mark. Results took six months of consistent use.
We think it's important to say this clearly: RevitaRoot is a cosmetic shampoo. It is not a treatment for hair loss, and we never claim that it is. If you're dealing with significant or sudden hair loss, a dermatologist is the right first step.
So why build a shampoo around rosemary?
Because the research gives us a good reason to care about rosemary at the scalp, and the shampoo is the one product almost everyone already uses, consistently, every week. We wanted that step to bring rosemary to the roots and to do something for the strand too.
That's why RevitaRoot pairs rosemary for the scalp with hydrolyzed keratin, a protein that coats and smooths the strand so it breaks less. Our honest advice: use it consistently, massage it in for a full minute, and give it a few months before you judge.
The bottom line
The 2015 study is an encouraging, real piece of research on rosemary oil. It isn't proof that any shampoo regrows hair, and you should be wary of anyone who says otherwise. What it does support is a simple idea we believe in: a scalp-first routine, with a botanical that has real research behind it, done consistently over time.
